Collaborative Material Selection and Design

Overview

The regeneration of The Strand in Torquay has transformed the town’s harbourside gateway, delivering improved pedestrian routes, high-quality public spaces and enhanced connections to the waterfront.

Working with the project team that included development partners; Willmott Dixon and Milligan, Hardscape supplied a co-ordinated palette of durable natural stone materials designed to respond to the coastal environment and high levels of public use.

Materials Supplied

The scheme features Kellen Breccia CERO Nerosso Argento and Tagenta C&E paving, complemented by Rosa Praia European granite seating blocks and planters and Rose Mill Red granite kerbs.

Kellen CERO paving utilises geopolymer technology to deliver CO₂ from just 7.3kg* per m2. By replacing much of the cement with an alternative binding agent, Carbon content in our CERO options is reduced by 50% compared to standard Kellen, already a leading environmentally friendly natural stone-topped concrete.

Outcomes and Conclusion

Together, these materials help create a robust, welcoming public realm that enhances Torquay’s vibrant harbour setting while supporting long-term performance and civic pride.

The project reflects Hardscape’s commitment to delivering high-quality materials that support enduring public realm design, helping create vibrant places that communities can enjoy for years to come.
