Collaborative Delivery

Scouting Square forms a key part of the wider regeneration of Birkenhead town centre along Grange Road, transforming a previously underutilised space into a vibrant civic destination. Located outside the former YMCA building the birthplace of the Scout Movement the scheme carefully balances contemporary public realm design with rich historical significance.

At the heart of the project was a strong collaborative approach between the design team, local authority, contractor and supply chain. Working closely with Planit, Wirral Council and GRAHAM, Hardscape supported the realisation of a cohesive, design-led public realm.

Through early engagement, material consultation and ongoing technical input, Hardscape ensured that the selected materials aligned with both the design intent and the functional demands of a high-footfall town centre environment. This collaborative process was key to delivering a scheme that is both durable and meaningful.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Hardscape supplied a coordinated palette of materials including Kellen CERO paving, Kobra Green granite and a blend of Egerton Holcombe sandstone, carefully selected to create a robust and visually unified surface.

Bespoke elements played a central role in reinforcing the identity of the space. Produced by Hardscape Surfaces, custom Iroko hardwood and Egerton Holcombe sandstone bespoke seating units were manufactured and detailed with specialist engraved motifs and fabricated phosphor bronze plaques, celebrating Birkenhead’s heritage from the Scout Movement to Birkenhead Park and the Cammell Laird Shipyard.

Intricately etched scouting badge emblems were also integrated into the Egerton Holcombe sandstone paving, further embedding the story of the site into the public realm.

Outcomes and Conclusion

The completed Scouting Square is a welcoming, contemporary civic space that successfully blends heritage with modern urban function. It demonstrates how thoughtful material selection and close collaboration across all project partners can deliver a place of lasting value enhancing accessibility, strengthening identity and creating a meaningful destination for the community.

Delivered as part of a wider regeneration programme supported by the Future High Streets Fund and Liverpool City Region Active Travel funding, the scheme stands as a benchmark for design-led, collaborative public realm delivery.
