Revitalising Redcar’s Town Centre
Southern Green was appointed by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to deliver a series of public realm improvements as part of Redcar’s ambitious £25 million Town Investment Plan. The wider regeneration programme seeks to revitalise the town centre, strengthen connections between the High Street and seafront, and create flexible civic spaces that celebrate Redcar’s unique coastal identity and industrial heritage.
A Material Palette Inspired by Place
Known as the “Mighty Redcar”, the North Yorkshire coastal town has a rich maritime history shaped by fishing, industry and community. Working closely with Southern Green and the wider project team, Hardscape supplied a coordinated palette of European granite and Kilkenny Irish Blue limestone paving and setts, selected for their durability, tonal quality and suitability for the demanding coastal environment.
The materials help establish a robust yet refined surface treatment across the High Street, Events Space, Esplanade and Station Road improvements, supporting both everyday use and seasonal activities.
Embedding Local Stories in Stone
A defining feature of the scheme was the integration of bespoke interpretive paving elements manufactured by Hardscape Surfaces. Using specialist sandblast-etching techniques, poetry, maritime illustrations and narrative text were engraved into the Kilkenny limestone paving, creating subtle moments of discovery throughout the public realm. The artwork explores Redcar’s maritime heritage, including references to the historic Plimsoll Line shipping safety mark and the town’s traditional beach-launched fishing cobles.
Craftsmanship & Collaboration
Southern Green was keen to embed authentic local storytelling within the landscape and commissioned local poet and fisherman’s daughter, Carmen Marcus, to create narrative text reflecting the spirit, culture and heritage of Redcar.
Hardscape Surfaces worked closely with the design team to ensure the etched artwork and typography translated accurately into stone, combining technical precision, craftsmanship and material expertise to bring the narrative to life.

The completed public realm provides a welcoming and flexible civic environment that reconnects Redcar’s town centre with its seafront setting while celebrating the town’s distinctive character.
