Transforming Manchester's Civic Heart
Albert Square sits at the heart of Manchester’s civic and cultural life, forming the setting for the iconic Grade I-listed Town Hall and hosting some of the city’s most significant public events. As part of the wider ‘Our Town Hall’ project, Manchester City Council embarked on an ambitious programme to expand, enhance and futureproof the square, creating one of Europe’s leading civic spaces while respecting its historic character.
The transformation significantly expands pedestrian space, enhances accessibility and introduces extensive new planting, creating a greener and more inclusive civic setting. Carefully designed public realm infrastructure and flexible event spaces enable the square to accommodate everything from large-scale civic celebrations and Christmas markets to everyday social activity, reinforcing its role as one of Manchester’s most important and dynamic public destinations.
Collaborative Public Realm Delivery
Working closely with Planit and Manchester City Council, Hardscape supported the delivery of a carefully considered public realm scheme that balances heritage, functionality and long-term performance. The enlarged square creates a stronger connection between the Town Hall and the surrounding city centre while providing a more welcoming and pedestrian-focused environment.
The design also incorporates new trees, improved lighting, enhanced accessibility and infrastructure capable of supporting the square’s extensive programme of civic events throughout the year.
Materials & Bespoke Features
Hardscape supplied a coordinated palette of high-quality natural stone materials selected to complement the historic setting while meeting the demands of a heavily used civic space. The selection included many European granites and Argyle Green Scottish Schist granite paving and setts. The scheme incorporates extensive granite sett paving and natural stone surfaces that create a durable and visually cohesive public realm, drawing inspiration from Manchester’s traditional streetscape while delivering a contemporary finish.
Alongside the paving materials, Hardscape Surfaces manufactured bespoke Argyle Green Scottish Schist granite planters/masonry and benches, providing carefully crafted elements that contribute to the overall quality and character of the square. Produced using a combination of advanced CNC manufacturing technology and traditional stonemasonry expertise, these bespoke components were designed to integrate seamlessly within the wider landscape scheme and withstand the demands of a major city-centre environment.
