The Society of Garden Designers announced the winners of the SGD Awards 2019 during its eighth annual award ceremony at the Landmark Hotel in London on Friday 1st February hosted by internationally acclaimed entertainer and member of the inner Magic Circle – Nigel Mead.
Hardscape was a proud sponsor of the hardscape category award which was won by Gavin McWilliam and Andrew Wilson for their Hertfordshire garden project. The judges commented: “Hugely accomplished and impeccably executed. Congrats all around!” The award was presented by Hardscape’s Sales Director, Anthony Collins.
Other special awards given on the night included the SGD Lifetime Achievement Award – an award granted to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the landscape and garden design profession. The Award, which is gifted by the Council of the Society of Garden Designers, was given to visionary garden designer and world-renowned plantsman Piet Oudolf.
The SGD Council said: “We are particularly proud to honour our seventh recipient of this most prestigious award. From the age of 25, this plantsman has made a phenomenal contribution to new ways of thinking on naturalistic planting using grasses and herbaceous plants. His plant combinations, brought to life through his seminal books written alongside Noel Kingsbury, have fast-tracked many a fledgling designer to add something quite magical to their projects and made his lifelong research accessible to others”
In other categories, Carolyn Willitts of CW Studio, Manchester, missed out on the main prize but was a runner up for the Public or Commercial Outdoor Space award for Moneypenny HQ, Wrexham, where Hardscape supplied some stunning Kilkenny Blue limestone paving and benches.
Also, Noel van Mierlo won the People’s Choice Award – the only award in the competition determined by the public vote.
The Grand Award, the most celebrated award of the evening, went to Marian Boswall MSGD for a mesmerising garden in Reighton Wood. The judging panel said: “A beautiful garden that makes an important, and long lasting, change to the landscape within which it sits. Demonstrating exquisite planting with texture, atmosphere and a great synergy of materials, it fits perfectly into its setting and looks wonderful all year round.”
